FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is indoor cycling?

Indoor cycling at Phileo Method, sometimes called “spinning” is a work out led by an instructor on a stationary bike equipped with a monitor that will tell you how fast you’re going, how hard you’re going and your mileage. Most of the movements you do on the bike will mimic movements done outdoors, with more flexibility to climb some steep hills and sprint very fast without having to wear a helmet!

At Phileo Method you will be led by a trained and certified instructor through a 45 minute to 1 hour workout guided by music and cues from the instructor to help you hit your unique fitness goals.

Indoor cycling is an all-levels workout because although you will receive guidance by your instructor, it is up to you to add on gear, move your legs faster, and move around on the bike. Your instructor will never turn your gear up for you or ask you to do something that could hurt you.

So pull on your socks, grab your water bottle, and come try a class already!

What is Barre?

Barre (Pronounced “Bar”) at Phileo Method,  is a workout led by a certified motivator, geared towards giving you a leaner, stronger body. Our Barre classes last 45 minutes and involve 1,2 & 3 pound weights as well as bands, body weight and a barre with mirrors. With time for arms, legs & the core, you are sure to see your balance and energy improve almost immediately!

At Phileo Method you will be led by a trained and certified instructor through a 45 minute workout guided by music and cues from the instructor to help you hit your unique fitness goals.

Indoor cycling is an all-levels workout because although you will receive guidance by your instructor, you are able to choose the size of your weights or you can even drop the weights and still get a great workout.

So pull on your sticky-socks, grab your water bottle, and come try a class already!

Will Phileo Method classes help me reach my fitness goals?

YES! Please talk to your Phileo Method instructor about your specific fitness goals. Whether you’re coming to the studio to try out something new, improve your cardio, cross-train for an event, or create an all-around healthy lifestyle, we can help you. With Phileo Method classes you can build your cardio and muscle strength while meeting local people on similar journeys. As a community, we all route for each other and we can’t wait to see you reach your goals!

Cycling Shoes - What are they & Do I need them?

The Keiser bikes that we use at Phileo Method have 2 options for shoes:

  1. Hard-sole sneakers that can be strapped in:
    1. If you are riding in sneakers, that is totally fine. We ask that you make sure your feet are tightened in the straps to keep them from coming out while you are riding and when you finish we ask that you loosen them up by pressing the black piece away from you and slipping your shoes out.
  2. Shoes made for cycling, equipped with SPD clips
    1. Cycling shoes are for everyone. They make it so that your foot is in the correct position to press down into the pedals with the most power and efficient form. They are more comfortable to wear while cycling and if you are trying to take your cycling to the next level, indoor cycling shoes will do just that. If you need help “clipping” on and off of the bike, a Phileo Method Motivator will be happy to show you how we do it. We recommend going to the Twisted Cog on Bridge Street who will fit you and install the SPD clips. They will also give you 10% off of your purchase if you mention Phileo Method! Otherwise, we can order a pair of these shoes for you at the studio, just ask Cat for details: https://www.tiemathletic.com/

I’ve never tried a group fitness class before. How do I start?

Sign up online for your first class, which is free. Making the commitment to walk into the studio is the 1st step. Leave the rest up to us. All of our classes are open to all levels. Please let your Phileo Method instructor know that it’s your first time in the studio and if you are taking a cycling class they will set you up on the bike and show you the monitor usage. If you are taking a Barre or Yoga class your instructor will set you up with your space and equipment needed. As you continue to take classes you will see yourself improving and trying new things. You owe it to yourself to see what your body can do, and we are here to help!

I have injuries, can I still participate?

Often, injuries attract people to try indoor cycling because of the low-impact, high intensity workout that it offers. Please consult with your doctor first and let your Phileo Method Instructor know about any injuries. Any Barre class can be completed without weights, using body weight to gain strength while recovering from an injury and Yoga is a great way to reduce your chances of getting injured again by lengthening, strengthening and stretching those muscles.

What should I wear? What should I bring?

If you are taking a cycling class we recommend wearing knee or ankle length tight pants or shorts that won’t ride up, to prevent any rubbing. You can wear a t-shirt or tank top, whatever you feel good sweating in. For Barre we recommend wearing tighter clothing so that your Phileo Method Instructor can help with your form, and we also recommend wearing non-slip socks. For Yoga, wear clothing that you can move around in.

We have towels available at the front desk, take 1, or 2 with you to your bike or mat. There is always bottled water available at the front desk for $1.

Barre is done barefoot or in non-slip socks, yoga is practiced bare-foot and cycling is done in sneakers or cycling shoes. Our bikes are SPD compatible; you can purchase shoes online on Amazon or at any local bike shop. If you need any help or recommendation, feel free to email Cat at Cat@phileofitness.com.

What if I need to cancel a class I signed up for?

Please cancel online within 8 hours of the class. As long as you cancel within 8 hours your class will be added back to your account. If you cancel within the 8 hour window you will forfeit the class.

Are there height and weight requirements for classes?

The height requirement for the cycling class  is 4’10” and there is a weight capacity of 300 pounds for the bikes. For Barre and Yoga there are no restrictions.

Please feel free to contact Cat at Cat@phileofitness.com with any additional questions.
